Heavenly Chorus

Hello and welcome to the final AP (Action Project) for my class, Drama. This unit we read A Raisin in The Sun a play written by Lorraine Hansberry in 1959. It entails an African-American family living on the South side of Chicago going through obstacles like blockbusting, gentrification, and racism. The name A Raisin in The Sun comes from Langston Hughes' poem, Harlem. Harlem focuses on what a dream can become and the first line is "What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?" We see the inspiration form the poem in the play through the character's dreams and what happened to them, what deferred them. This unit we focused on the matriarchy, as the play has a matriarchy. Now, what is a matriarchy I hear you say? The answer is that a matriarch is a(sometimes older) woman is in charge of a group of people.

For our AP this unit we were to chose two characters in conflict within the play. Within the two characters, we had to choose one to focus on and write a Greek chorus about their actions and growth. I choose to work on Mama, the head of the Younger household, as she goes through a lot of growth in the play. The conflict I choose is between her and her daughter, Beneatha. The two are fighting about God as Beneatha is an atheist and Mama is a very religious woman.

Here is my Greek chorus for Lena Younger (Mama) about God and her role as a matriarch in the Younger family. Excerpts from Act 1 Scene 1.
