Is it Crystal Clear?

Curtains rise and the room falls silent. The play will begin shortly, and everyone is jittering from excitement.

Hello! This is my AP for my Humanities class, Drama. In this class, we have read A Doll's House a play by Henrik Ibsen and we dissected how gender roles and expectations have changed and evolved over time. We also watched a rendition of the play to have a more ingrained view of what was happening. Through reading the play, and going to The Goodman Theater for a few workshops, we learned about stage direction, what stage left and right is, and how to write good stage directions. A really fun experience I had in this class was the day we did improve for class. It was so much fun to bond with my classmates over silly prompts and exaggerated reactions. I also believe it did us a lot of good for our AP as we had to act in it.

For our AP we were to write a play in formal formatting including Nora, from A Doll's House, a female figure, from Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party, and a modern times male figure. They were each to have a different reaction and position on a certain topic that had to do with gender inequality. For my AP, which I did with my partners MT and SON, we chose to talk about the unequal power dynamics males usually have in marriage with females. Our casts included Nora, played by MT, Hera, played by me, and Steven, played by SON. Here is a video of our rendition and our script!

In our play, I wanted to show how men feel entitled to know things and give their opinion yet not know what they're talking about. Steven is put in a situation where he thinks, might as well say something. He is condescending in how he refers to Nora and Hera by the wrong names and in his tone. Hera and Nora are also part of the problem though, they allow Steven to talk and actually think about what he's saying. Nora does at one point call him out, but Hera is used to being submissive and doesn't call him out until the end of the play. If it wasn't clear to you, Nora is opposed to marriage completely, Hera is all for marriage, and Steven thinks it's alright, but in its current state it's lacking.

I hope you enjoyed reading and watching Crystal Skylark!
