Fractures of The Mind

In class, you being to feel weightless; fear strikes you in the stomach. It's beginning. Your breathing becomes labored and you feel as though you're drifting from your body. You can't make it stop; all you can do is experience the effect of the fractures in your mind.

Sorry for the scary intro, and welcome to the second AP (Action Project) for my class, Disease! This class is all about diseases, physical and mental. In this unit, we studied mental diseases/illnesses, focusing on the autism spectrum and schizophrenia. We also read the book The Reason I Jump by Naoki Higashida. We've learned about the connections between the mind and body, and how mental illnesses affect our brainwaves, piecewise functions, and so much more.

For this AP we were supposed to pick a mental illness, study it, and create a simulation of it to create empathy. I chose to study DDD, Depersonalization/derealization disorder. It is a disorder in which a person feels a disconnect between their mind, self, body, or reality. Below you can see a video of my class reacting to my simulation, a flier about DDD and my process in making this simulation. Hope you enjoy!

This experience, for me, was really exciting! Besides investigating an illness I thought was important to learn about, I got to learn about the illnesses that my classmates studied! It was so fascinating to see how my classmates wanted to interpret and represent the illnesses they analyzed, and how they responded to certain simulations. Overall, I believe it is quite essential that we, as teenagers, learn about all sorts of illnesses, physical and mental. Thus, in the future, we are educated and not fearful of people who have these illnesses. Learning about them now will prepare us to be respectful and empathetic in academic and professional areas. Thank you for going on this journey with me, I hope you enjoyed it.
