Dance with our Failing Society
Hello! We are wrapping up our SDG Humanities unit and it's time we unleash our AP (action project) to the world. This unit was focusing on the UN's SDG's (Sustainable Development Goals) and how unjust the world is, and what we can do about it.We went on a few FE's (Field experience) but my favorite two were when we had the guest speaker Scout Bratt from the Chicago Women's Health Center, and when we went to the Center on Halsted and talked to George Storms. Scout came to talk to us not only about women's health but about the health of transgender people as well. We learned about a hierarchy which implied that social groups have an impact on health, both physical and mental. This hierarchy started with an individual, interpersonal, community, and ended with society. We learned how health isn't just the doctor telling you that you aren't 'sick' but that it means on all levels you are a peace and in good standing. (this means mentally, spiritually, and physically). What I liked about The Center on Halsted was that Mr. Storms should us around the whole facility and explained to us why they offer their service to LGTBQ+ youth and elders. Most were thrown out of their homes or didn't know where they would fit in.
We have been working on two essays before finally making this AP, both being about a certain SDG. My first one was about why education should be a human right (SDG 3), my second essay was about gender inequality, specifically the gender pay gap in Mexico and America (SDG 4). And the third 'essay' was more open to creativity as it didn't need to be an essay. As such I chose SDG 10 to be the muse for my art piece showing how many people because they are 'different' they have a saddening disadvantage in America.
I believe everyone should know this information as everyone should be furious that this is happening all around the globe and in the land of the free where there is justice for all. Even if none of these disadvantages affect you they might affect your parents, friends, children, spouse, anyone. It is important that people are informed about this so they understand people better and so they can take action against this. With this AP I have learned so much about how unjust and inhumane the world really is. Honestly, I might be cynical at this point, the world hates everyone so why not hate the world! But seriously, even though I am terribly angry I won't just sit here and relish in my anger if this AP has shown me anything is that it is vital to take action if you think something isn't right. You should never be afraid to say what you believe in (unless it endangers anyone) or to stand up for anything you believe is wrong and unjust. Of course, there is no wrong v. good, this world is too colorful to be so black and white. So keep in mind if you think something isn't right, others may disagree Though do remember respect existence or expect resistance.
